Civic Exam format and structure

The Civic Exam is a computer-based multiple-choice test (MCQ) in French with 40 questions, split into two parts:

  • Knowledge questions, 28 questions

    • Principles and values of the French Republic (5 questions)

    • Political and institutional system (6 questions)

    • Rights and duties (5 questions)

    • History, geography and culture (8 questions)

    • Living in French society (4 questions)

  • Situational questions, 12 questions

    • Principles and values of the French Republic (6 questions)

    • Rights and duties (6 questions)

The difficulty and language level vary by procedure: (CSP-A2 level, CR-B1 level, Naturalisation – B2 level)

To pass, you must score at least 32 correct answers out of 40 (80%).

Taking the Civic Exam in Montpellier

On exam day, arrive at the time indicated on your exam notice.

The supervisor will check your ID and your exam notice, then ask you to confirm your personal details (first name, last name, date of birth, email). A photo and signature are collected. These appear on your certificate, so check everything carefully before starting.

Key rules during the test:

  • phones and electronic devices switched off, stored with your belongings

  • no dictionary, no reference materials

  • no notes, no scrap paper

  • no entry once the test has started

  • no leaving the room during the exam

Accepted ID: a residence permit for all candidates, passport or national ID card for EU citizens.

Results and certificate

Results are typically released within 24 to 48 business hours after the test.

You receive an email with a link to a secure digital vault to access your certificate. No paper certificate is provided.

The certificate is valid with no time limit. It is kept for 10 years, so save a copy for your records.

If you do not pass, you can retake the exam as many times as necessary. A 1-day waiting period applies between two attempts.
